Our Family Portrait

Here it comes.......
My daughter has successfully graduated from dots, triangle, circle, square, lines, suns, moons to people, people!
What she had been learning for the past few days came together in this portrait!
Although she wanted to incorporate the shape 'pentagon' somewhere, after much deliberation concluded that it doesn't fit here and dropped the idea.

Left to right: Tanya and Mommy.

I got the camera clicked a few ones and now i asked her where her dad is.
She started saying 'at office' but realised that she had not been thoughtful enough. Ahem..... Looked guilty for a while and searched for the chalk to complete the family portrait while i went back to my computer. Here is the finished product....

I was super thrilled and clapped my hands but did you notice the poor one-legged dad? he heee
I asked her after she had basked in her glory about the missing leg.....
She started looking for the chalk again but stopped for a second, looked at her work and said

"It's behind my leg"
I considered her explanation and asked her how her dad's big leg would stay hidden behind Tanya's small one? .... Now she knew she was stumped or so i thought, she looked at me and said
"Well. It is MY drawing and i've hidden it!"

I had to give it to her :)

This was very amusing and touching at the same time :) It made me want to put something up on my blog that my daughter drew that really touched me and made me feel proud! Maybe some day I will ..

How old is your lil one? She seems more smart compared to her mom ;)

Clapping for tanya!

I have to refrain myself from analyzing this drawing.

There is a projective test that we usually give to children to draw their family. This gives us insight into family dynamics.

My lips are sealed.

@ prabhu: yeah... i can see Sh right beside you man :)

@romila: oh yeah. i was stumped :(

@ reeta: ha ha. go on clap.....she loves it when people clap.

@ kp: he heeee. So many seem to think that way. Poor mama she does all the work... :(

@solitaire: ha haaaa solitaire...... If you really didn't want to say anything you wouldn't have written this comment in the first place. When something goes unsaid people tend to imagine the worst :) That's human psychology for you :P Dunno how you'll take it but i don't care much about a psychologist's opinion. I have asked you about this before and will ask it again, if you second guess evrything and analyse things and judge things with what you've read even if it is drawing by a 3 yr old can you really have a normal view on life in general?
It is difficult. anyway keep doing what you do i'll be posting more of her drawings.

You got a smart one on your hands eh...I'd suggest you give her paper and crayons or colour pencils if she is material agnostic. That way you will have actual work to put up somewhere rather than just pictures of her 'early works'.

@ cosmic - took many wise cracks happening haan.

@ solitaire - I actually might be interested in knowing more of what you would have said. If you ever have the time, let me know.

could not resist commenting - lunch time and am back here :)

first of all good work tanya - dear mommy - if you ever need to teach her to draw and paint - will be delighted to teach her :)

i dunno how many have read "the little prince"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Prince
Here is a free PDF link
http://www.cs.swan.ac.uk/~cswill/The_little_prince.pdf
please do read it. its a small 80 page book - that shows how a crative mind of a child works and how he is miffed at some of the suggestions and ideas of adults - just like tanya must have had when you asked her those questions :)....

well and I second deepali above - would like to see what solitaire has to say as an exercise....

let me know if you read and like the book.....

@ deepali: Somehow her work seems better on board than on paper. May be colour chalk wud do the trick. But the board is so small that she tends to cram things wherever she finds place.

TO DEEPALI SOLITAIRE AND CEEDY:
To your comment for solitaire:
I've done a bit of psychology myself. Family dynamics interpretation is not done by some pic u see online. You have to ask the child to explain the drawing. The whys of it all.
Little knowledge is always dangerous. And a highly educated doctor would never have made the comment that solitaire just did. It was absurd and highly immature.
And a 3 yr old is not the right candidate for this. 5 yrs is when all the shapes of the body comes out. There are no missing body parts then :)9 yrs is when it will be more detailed.
And besides i hope you ALL take it in the right sense,
Interpreting this here is not something that i'd like.
You cud ask her about general information not my family. I did not expect this take on an innocent drawing by my child, i have to be extremely careful about my postings from now on. Another lesson learnt.

I take back my request....sorry and you are absolutly right.......

but please read the book though - nothing about pyschology or anything..........

just mere child fun :)

At 1:08 PM, Blogger Deepali said...

I'm not interested in the analysis, please don't misunderstand. I am interested in the concept - not related to this picture or any. Just a general understand of what is looked at and what is inferred and how.

A one size fits all never works for anything and I doubt it would with psychology too so I would think you are right, you can't look at a picture and draw some conclusions.

Please don't be 'extremely careful' about your postings. Apologies. I am sure no offense was intended by anyone.

It was never my intention to write up a detailed analysis of a drawing by a child that I know nothing about on a public forum and neither am I trained nor interested in projective techniques. So there was no offense intended. I am sorry that you misinterpreted a comment made in jest. No more humor here. Another lesson learnt. :)
BTW, that was a humor.

ek din kabhi chat pe milo - it will be fun - and ill tell you a thing or two about where cosmic learned ":P" from.

At 10:00 PM, Blogger aMus said...

that was a sweet explanation indeed...i love the little things they dream up and try to create on paper... esp when they try to incoporate everything they learn into that lil space...

At 10:57 AM, Blogger Preethi said...

@ deepali: I can see that :) Chat tho, i'm not very good at it but when i'm on i'll want to give it a shot. That'll be fun and cosmic's ':P ' i'm thinking he learnt it from you? he heee

@ thinking aloud: you are so right. I wish there was a huge board for her. I'm thinking of painting one wall with the chalk board paint. She can do whatever she wants then !
